Accepting the Challenge of Excellence

This award, initiated in 2012, recognizes high school students who have had to overcome great physical, emotional, or social obstacles and are now eligible for high school graduation.  This is a positive program with two key objectives: first, it helps encourage students to overcome their hardships and get back on track toward a high school diploma; second, it recognizes those students who are often overlooked for their accomplishments.  This special recognition serves as a powerful example to all students that hard work and perseverance really do pay.

The 2012 inaugural award recipient was Chelsea Morgan, a Jefferson High School senior in the JAG program.  Chelsea plans to attend Vincennes University to begin preparing for a nursing career in Gastroenterology. Committee chair Marti Dyer is shown presenting the plaque and cash award at the weekly Exchange meeting.

2013 Award:

Angela Bradford, winner of both the Lafayette Exchange Club award as well at the District level, was introduced by her Harrison High Guidance Counselor, Paula Green at the June 5th meeting. Angela overcame being “put down” by her family while she worked 35 hours at Great Skates. She moved in with her grandfather, Farris Bradford, who accompanied her. Relieved of stress, Angela made the honor role twice and earned a scholarship to Ivy Tech. She volunteers for blood drives where she has dressed as a vampire. Having a great love for animals, Angela plans to be a veterinarian, opening a shelter for stray pets and offering free spay/neutering of dogs and cats to control the overabundance of these animals. Committee Chair Marti Dyer presented her scholarship check.
