National History

Exchange evolved from a group of Detroit businessmen who began meeting informally for lunch in 1896 to exchange business leads and information.  Under the leadership of Charles Berkey, a wholesale jeweler, he and 12 others met as the first Exchange Club on March 27, 1911; the name chosen because the organization's key purpose was information exchange.

Charles Berkey

became a national organization in 1917 with headquarters in Toledo, Ohio.  Through the years, Exchangites have served their communities in important ways.  In 1979, Child Abuse Prevention was adopted as Exchange's national project.  Through numerous local child abuse prevention centers and the publishing and distribution of educational materials, tens of thousands of parents and children have learned how to eliminate child abuse from their lives.
